Security forces kill mastermind of Hangu police checkpost attack: sources

Security forces have killed the mastermind behind the July 30 attack on a police checkpost in Hangu, which claimed the lives of nine police officials, a senior security official told Dawn on Sunday.

Security sources identified the slain terrorist as Amir Mauviya, who they said was killed during an intelligence-based operation in Hangu’s Chapri Naryab.

According to the sources, the slain terrorist held an important position among Fitna-al-Khawarij in Kurram, and was wanted in several other terrorism cases.

Fitna-al-Khawarij is a term the state uses for the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.

The sources added that under Operation 11 Garaj, operations against terrorists had been intensified.

The attack on the Khazina Banda checkpost had claimed the lives of nine police personnel, including a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and left 28 injured.

A statement issued by KP Inspector General (IG) Zulfiqar Hameed at the time said that the checkpost was attacked by Fitna al Khawarij, to which the police personnel responded bravely, while additional personnel were also dispatched. 15 terrorists were killed as a result of the police’s response.

At least 112 security personnel lost their lives in July in terrorist incidents, according to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies’ (PICSS) monthly security assessment.

Mainland KP saw 154 deaths, recording an increase of 105 per cent from the previous month, out of which at least 38 were security personnel.

Ministers rubbish notion that proposed retirement age extension to favour ‘one particular institution’

Mitchell Starc surpasses Wasim Akram as most prolific left-arm pacer in Test history

Australian veteran Mitchell Starc became the most prolific left-arm paceman in Test history on Thursday, surpassing Pakistan great Wasim Akram.
