More women come forward over ‘prolific’ Chinese rapist

More than 20 women have come forward to say they may have been sexually assaulted by a Chinese student convicted last month of raping 10 women, London police said on Wednesday after an international appeal. According to a report published in 2024, Unicef estimates revealed that more than 370 million girls and women alive today experienced rape or sexual assault before the age of 18. Serial rapist Zhenhao Zou, 28, who is due to be sentenced in June, targeted young Chinese women whom he invited to his flat for drinks or to study before drugging and attacking them. He filmed some of the rapes with hidden or handheld cameras, his London trial was told. Of the 10 women cited in the trial, only two have been identified. After his March 5 conviction, London’s Met police said they had evidence to suggest he could have targeted more than 50 other women and urged possible victims to come forward. “Given how prolific Zou seems to have been, there is every potential he could be one of the mo...

A father and his two daughters lost their lives on Wednesday, while four others were injured after a car and a passenger coach collided near the Gambat city of Sindh’s Khairpur district, police said. Fatal road accidents on highways occur frequently in Pakistan, with the main reasons including speeding, hazardous overtaking and disregard for traffic rules. Gambat Station House Officer (SHO) Rafiq Soomro confirmed the casualties to Dawn.com . He said the bodies and the injured have been shifted to the Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (Gims). The three individuals were heading towards Karachi in a Toyota Corolla while the coach was bound for upcountry, SHO Soomro said. He suspected that the car driver either lost control of the steering wheel or fell asleep while driving and hit the coach on the opposite road. It was unclear who was driving the car. Myanmar quake victim rescued after 5 days as death toll rises to over 2,880

Rescuers in Mandalay on Wednesday pulled a man alive from the rubble five days after Myanmar’s devastating earthquake , as calls grew for the junta to allow more aid in and halt attacks on rebels. The shallow 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Friday flattened buildings across Myanmar, killing more than 2,800 people and making thousands more homeless. Myanmar’s state television MRTV said the death toll from last week’s earthquake has risen to 2,886. MRTV on Telegram also said 4,639 people were injured and 373 were missing, according to data as of Wednesday morning. Several leading armed groups fighting the government have suspended hostilities during the quake recovery, but junta chief Min Aung Hlaing said military operations would continue — despite international criticism of multiple reported air strikes . UN agencies, rights groups and foreign governments have urged all sides in Myanmar’s civil war to stop fighting and focus on helping those affected by the quake, the biggest to ...

Singapore detains teenage boy allegedly planning to kill Muslims

A Singaporean teenager allegedly planning to kill dozens of Muslims outside several mosques has been detained, the city-state’s Internal Security Department said on Wednesday. The 17-year-old boy was detained in March, the ISD said in a statement, adding that he had regarded white supremacist Brenton Tarrant — who in 2019 had killed worshippers at mosques in New Zealand — as a “hero”. The ISD also said he had “identified as an ‘East Asian Supremacist’”, and had decided on five mosques across Singapore for his post-Friday prayer attacks. “This boy wanted to kill at least 100 Muslims, so that he can kill more Muslims than Tarrant had killed. He also wanted to live-stream his attacks,” Home Minister K Shanmugam told reporters. “When he was arrested… he had already made a number of attempts to get a gun. He told ISD quite openly if he had gotten a gun, he would have carried out his attacks.” The teen had been in online contact with 18-year-old Nick Lee , who was detained in December ...

Myanmar earthquake survivors without food and shelter as death toll rises above 2,700

Aid groups in the worst-hit areas of Myanmar said there was an urgent need for shelter, food and water after an earthquake that killed more than 2,700 people, but said the country’s civil war could prevent help reaching those in need. The death toll had reached 2,719 and is expected to rise to more than 3,000, Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing said in a televised address on Tuesday. He said 4,521 people were injured, and 441 were missing. The 7.7 magnitude quake , which hit around lunchtime on Friday, was the strongest to hit the Southeast Asian country in more than a century, toppling ancient pagodas and modern buildings alike. In neighbouring Thailand, rescuers pressed on searching for life in the rubble of a collapsed skyscraper in the capital Bangkok, but acknowledged time was against them. In Myanmar’s Mandalay area, 50 children and two teachers were killed when their preschool collapsed, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)...

South Korea court to rule Friday on president impeachment

South Korea’s Constitutional Court will issue its long-awaited ruling on President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment on Friday, months after he was suspended for declaring martial law. Yoon’s December 3 attempt to subvert civilian rule plunged South Korea into political chaos after he sent armed soldiers into parliament. Lawmakers defied the troops to vote the measure down and impeached Yoon soon after, but months of political instability have hit South Korea’s economy and left the country in leadership limbo, as US President Donald Trump targets the region with sweeping tariffs. The court held weeks of impeachment hearings to determine whether to officially remove Yoon from office and then took weeks to deliberate on the case, giving rise to speculation that the judges were locked in intense disagreements. “The president’s impeachment case verdict will be on April 4, 2025 at the Constitutional Court,” the court finally said in a statement Tuesday. For Yoon to be removed from off...
