Residents of Murree, adjoining areas find flaws with Serena underpass project

ISLAMABAD: One of the ongoing multibillion Serena underpasses project will be of no use unless the Capital Development Authority (CDA) comes up with a solution to link Srinagar Highway with the road coming from Murree. People of Murree and adjoining areas through their joint forum — Kohsar United Front — have requested Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa to look into this issue and provide a link to traffic coming from Murree Road with Srinagar Highway through underpass or flyover. Currently, work on Serena road project worth Rs4.2 billion, is in progress under which the CDA is supposed to construct three underpasses — two on Srinagar Highway and one on Khyaban-i-Soharwardi with loops. The underpasses on Srinagar Highway are designed to ensure smooth flow of traffic on this busy road. During a visit to the site, Dawn noticed that traffic coming from Murree side will not get benefit out of the underpass if the road was not linked with Srinagar High...

Three terrorists were killed while two others were injured during intelligence-based operations (IBOs) carried out by security forces in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu District, the military’s media affairs wing said on Friday. Facing a sharp uptick in the number of attacks targeting security forces and other law enforcement agencies, especially in KP and Balochistan, the state has intensified counterterrorism operations under Vision Azm-i-Istehkam . According to a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), security forces conducted an IBO in Bannu District in the early hours of November 22 on the “reported presence of khwarij ”. “During conduct of the operation, own troops effectively engaged khwarij location, as a result of which, three khwarij were sent to hell while two khwarij got injured,” the statement read. In July, the government had designated the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as Fitna al Khawarij , while mandating all institutions to use the te...

US govt calls for breakup of Google and Chrome

The US government on late Wednesday asked a judge to order the dismantling of Google by selling its widely used Chrome browser in a major antitrust crackdown on the internet giant. In a court filing, the US Department of Justice urged a shake-up of Google’s business that includes banning deals for Google to be the default search engine on smartphones and preventing it from exploiting its Android mobile operating system. Antitrust officials said in the filing that Google should also be made to sell Android if the proposed remedies don’t prevent the tech company from using its control of the mobile operating system to its advantage. Calling for the breakup of Google marks a profound change by the US government’s regulators, which have largely left tech giants alone since failing to break up Microsoft two decades ago. Google is expected to make its recommendations in a filing next month and both sides will make their case at a hearing in April before US District Court Judge Amit M...

IHC grants Imran bail in new Toshakhana case

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday granted bail to incarcerated former premier Imran Khan in a recent Toshakhana case. IHC’s Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb presided over the case today and granted bail subject to furnishing two bonds of Rs1 million each. The judge also ordered the PTI founder to appear before the trial court after bail, warning that the bail could be revoked if Imran did not cooperate with the court during the trial. Imran and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were apprehended in the case on July 13, following their acquittal in the Iddat case the same day. While Bushra Bibi had secured bail in the case from the IHC last month, allowing her to be freed from jail, the PTI founder has remained incarcerated since his arrest on August 5 last year in a separate Toshakhana case. In the most recent case, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) accused the couple of retaining an expensive Bulgari jewellery set gifted by a foreign leader — including a necklace, earrings,...

Fact check: Video of Attaullah Esakhelvi urging people to come out for Imran is old, not for Nov 24 rally

Posts from several PTI-affiliated accounts on social media platform X since November 17 shared a video of veteran Pakistani singer Attaullah Esakhelvi urging people to come out and participate in a PTI protest ahead of the party’s Nov 24 power show . However, the video is old from March 2022. The iVerify Pakistan team has reviewed this content and determined that it is misleading . To reach this conclusion, iVerify Pakistan conducted a reverse image search to investigate the viral video of veteran Pakistani singer Attaullah Esakhelvi. On Nov 13, PTI founder Imran Khan issued a “final call” for nationwide protests on Nov 24 (Sunday), denouncing what he described as the stolen mandate, the unjust arrests of people and the passage of the 26th Amendment, which he said strengthened a “dictatorial regime”. Since Imran’s arrest in August 2023 on several counts, his party has been holding protests across the country for his release and against the alleged rigging of the Feb 8, 2024 electi...
