The health department issued an advisory urging the public to maintain clean and dry surroundings to prevent the spread of the

Climate change made Hurricane Milton worse, scientists say

The brutal wind and torrential rainfall of Hurricane Milton that killed 16 people in Florida this week were worsened by human-caused climate change, a team of international scientists said on Friday. Global warming made wind speeds around 10 per cent stronger and rainfall greater by between 20pc and 30pc, according to an analysis by World Weather Attribution. The group of climate scientists studies the role of climate change in fuelling extreme weather. Milton intensified from a Category 1 storm into a tempestuous Category 5 in less than 24 hours, feeding off record- and near-record-warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico. It made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 hurricane. Previous scientific analyses have shown climate change has made such temperatures in the Gulf between 400 and 800 times more likely. This extra heat made Milton the third-fastest intensifying Atlantic hurricane on record, the US National Hurricane Centre said, with maximum sustained wind speeds reaching 180 mph (29

Japan’s Nihon Hidankyo wins 2024 Nobel Peace Prize

Japanese organisation Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki also known as Hibakusha, won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. “Hibakusha is receiving the Peace Prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said in its citation. Witnesses to the only two nuclear bombs ever to be used in conflict have dedicated their lives to the struggle for a nuclear-free world. “The Hibakusha help us to describe the indescribable, to think the unthinkable, and to somehow grasp the incomprehensible pain and suffering caused by nuclear weapons,” the committee said. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has regularly put focus on the issue of nuclear weapons, most recently with its award to the ICAN, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, who won the award in 2017. The Nobel Peace Prize, worth 11

Indian doctor on hunger strike over medic’s rape and murder has been hospitalised

A junior doctor on hunger strike in India over the rape and murder of a fellow medic has been hospitalised with severe dehydration, authorities said on Friday. Aniket Mahato and six others began their hunger strike on Sunday, to protest against what they say are inadequate facilities and security for doctors, many of whom work long shifts in crowded, squalid hospitals. “When he was admitted he was severely dehydrated, pulse rate was very high and was in a very unstable condition,” Soma Mukhopadhyay, a professor at the hospital, said. His pulse, blood pressure and fluid levels had improved by Friday afternoon, she said but added more investigation was needed about other possible damage. Mahato, a junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state, was taken to the hospital on Thursday night. The rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at the hospital has triggered a wave of protests by doctors across the country, demanding greater workplace safety for w

Aurangzeb says sales tax evasion accounts for half of tax leakage

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Thursday said that sales tax evasion by companies was responsible for 50 per cent of tax leakage the government had estimated at Rs7 trillion previously. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, the finance minister, along with Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Langrial, said that he wanted to address the “war on tax fraud”, saying that it was a necessity to increase the tax-to-GDP ratio to 13pc. “It is important that we take you all on board and have a fact-based discussion,” he said. “This is not a 10,00 feet level discussion — this is not an emotional discussion.” The finance minister noted that the burden of taxation, which primarily fell on the salaried and manufacturing class, “has to now be taken evenly to bring tax-to-GDP ratio up so that we can be a sustainable country”. On tax fraud, the finance minister presented a slide show, stating there was a need for a “fact-based” discussion to rein in tax fraud. “On the other
