Driver responsible for Karachi’s Karsaz Road accident sent to jail on 14-day judicial remand

A Karachi city court on Wednesday sent a driver to jail on a 14-day judicial remand over a deadly accident that killed two people earlier this week. On Monday evening, a speeding Toyota Land Cruiser, driven by Natasha Danish, hit three motorcycles and another car before overturning on the city’s Karsaz Road. Sixty-year-old Imran Arif and his 22-year-old daughter Amna were killed in the accident while three others were wounded. Subsequently, the driver was arrested and booked for manslaughter charges . However, on Tuesday, police failed to produce the suspect in court on the ground that she was undergoing psychiatric treatment at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) while in custody. The investigation officer (IO) had sought a 14-day police remand for the suspect, but the court handed the suspect into police custody for one day. Upon the court’s directives, the suspect was produced before a District East judicial magistrate today, where the police again sought her on a 14

‘Abuse every day’: Indian female medics speak out after rape and murder of 31-year-old doctor

Saving lives was the childhood dream for 28-year-old Indian doctor Radhika, but after the brutal rape and murder of a colleague her own safety has increasingly become a top concern. Earlier this month, at the government-run hospital where Radhika works in the eastern city of Kolkata, the battered and bloodied body of a 31-year-old woman doctor was found, sparking outrage. One man has been detained, but the attack has focused anger on the lack of measures for female doctors to work without fear, and triggered protests and medical strikes. “I was on night duty just two days before this incident,” Radhika said at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. “What she did is what any of us do — resting whenever, wherever we can”. The murdered doctor — who has not been formally named but is being called “Abhaya”, or “fearless” by protesters — was found in the teaching hospital’s seminar hall, suggesting she had gone there for a break during a long shift. Radhika, whose name has b

FIA files cyberterrorism case against suspect for allegedly sharing fake news that incited UK riots

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested and booked a Lahore resident for allegedly sharing fake information that incited the recent riots across the UK, it emerged on Wednesday. More than a week after the kingdom witnessed widespread riots in the aftermath of the fatal stabbing of three young girls in Southport, law enforcement agencies began probing claims that the disinformation originated from a website with a footprint in Pakistan. Reports aired by UK media identified little-known platform Channel3Now as the source of the disinformation that claimed the British-born 17-year-old suspect was a Muslim immigrant who had arrived in the UK on a boat. However, UK broadcaster ITV News asserted that a Pakistani individual was the originator of the false news story. Lahore Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Faisal Kamran told Dawn they were analysing the claims made by ITV News and had initiated a probe. According to a First Information Report (FIR) registered by th

India’s top court orders medical safety task force after doctor rape protests

India’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered a national task force to examine how to bolster security for healthcare workers after the “horrific” rape and murder of a doctor sparked medical strikes and furious protests. The discovery of the 31-year-old doctor’s bloodied body at a state-run hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata on August 9 has stoked nationwide anger at the chronic issue of violence against women. Doctors’ associations from government-run hospitals in many cities across India have launched multiple strikes that cut non-essential services, with protests in their second week. Demonstrators marched through Kolkata on Tuesday, holding up signs demanding “justice”, while the country’s top court issued orders in the capital New Delhi. “The brutality of the sexual assault and the nature of the crime have shocked the conscience of the nation,” the three-judge bench said in its order, calling the details “horrific”. Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud read out the order, whi

Pakistani fintech startup PostEx raises $7.3m in pre-series A funding

PostEx, a fintech startup, has announced that it raised $7.3 million in pre-series A funding round, which provides startups the necessary capital to further develop their business, it became known on Tuesday. Pre-series A funding is an intermediate investment round between seed funding and series A, aimed at helping startups bridge the gap by refining their product and achieving key milestones before a larger series A round. The startup, according to the statement, utilises a hybrid model of fintech and logistics to provid

Search resumes in Sicily yacht sinking with Morgan Stanley boss among missing

Specialist divers on Tuesday launched a fresh search for six people, including UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch and the chairman of Morgan Stanley International, missing since their yacht capsized off the Italian island of Sicily. The British-flagged Bayesian, which had 22 people onboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from the port before dawn Monday when it was struck by a waterspout, a sort of mini tornado. Fifteen people aboard, including a mother with a one-year-old baby, were plucked to safety. One man has been found dead and six people remain missing. On Tuesday, three divers strapped on oxygen bottles and began their descent to the wreck, some 50 metres below the sea surface. Most of those aboard the yacht were British and the passengers were guests of Lynch, celebrating his recent acquittal in a massive US fraud case, according to Italian media. Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares was among the 15 people rescued, but the businessman and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah w

Emergency measures activated to ease English prisons’ overcrowding

The UK government activated emergency measures on Monday to ease overcrowding in prisons in northern England, as growing numbers of people are convicted for involvement in the riots seen earlier this month. The decision to invoke “Operation Early Dawn”, which allows defendants to be held in police cells and not summoned to court until space in prison becomes available, follows hundreds of convictions for participating in the disorder. That has exacerbated a capacity crisis within the prison system in England and Wales, with the new Labour government warning last month it was on the brink of “collapse” due to overcrowding . England and Wales have the highest per capita prison population in Western Europe. The government has already announced plans to release thousands of prisoners early in September to deal with the crisis. Operation Early Dawn will see officials across northern England make an operational assessment each morning and throughout the day over which defendants can att
