PCB Chairman Naqvi approves promotion of ‘quality domestic’ cricket

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Monday approved the promotion of “quality domestic” cricket on all levels, calling for tournaments to be organised from the club level to the national level. A stunning super-over humiliation for the Green Team at the hands of the United States was followed by a six-run loss to bitter rivals India in a game where they failed to chase down a paltry 120-run target. Subsequently, after rain distributed equal points in the match between Ireland and the USA, Pakistan were indirectly knocked out of a T20 World Cup tournament’s group stages for the first time in their history. On June 11, after Pakistan’s loss against India, Naqvi came down heavily on the team management and said the Babar Azam-led side requires “ major surgery ”. Mohsin also felt that it was time to start looking at players who have been sitting outside the team. While presiding over a meeting in Lahore’s National Cricket Academy today, Naqvi said, “Quality domest

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi on Monday suggested that the federal government hold meetings on counterterrorism with the KP assembly in terrorism hotzones across the province instead of Islamabad. The federal government on Saturday approved a reinvigorated and re-energised national counter-terrorism campaign, Operation Azm-i-Istehkam, that symbolised the national resolve to eradicate extremism and terrorism from the country. The campaign was launched with the consensus of all stakeholders, including the provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, during a meeting of the Central Apex Committee on the National Action Plan (NAP), chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. “Azm-i-Istehkam will integrate and synergise multiple lines of effort to combat the menaces of extremism and terrorism in a comprehensive and decisive manner,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a press release. However, in a parliament session marred by ruckus on Sunday, Defence

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday approved the deployment of the Frontier Constabulary (FC) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) at the request of Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, in a decision that raised eyebrows in the region given the recent incidents that had led to three deaths in state capital Muzaffarabad allegedly at the hands of a paramilitary force. The deployment comes on the heels of a warning by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) that the activists of the rights movement would stage “peaceful sit-ins” at AJK’s entry and exit points with Pakistan if the authorities did not honour the pledges made to the alliance leadership and released the detained activists by June 25. According to a press release issued by the AJK government, the meeting between Haq and Naqvi, held in the latter’s office in the federal capital, focused on the law and order situation and overall security in the liberated territory. Both leaders also discussed the political climate an

Pat Cummins equals Wasim Akram’s record with hat-tricks in consecutive international matches

Australian pacer Pat Cummins on Sunday became only the second bowler ever to take a hat-trick in consecutive international matches — a feat previously accomplished only by Pakistan’s Wasim Akram. The pacer secured his first hat-trick earlier this week in the win over Bangladesh before bagging another three-on-three in the surprise defeat to Afghanistan today. He dismissed Rashid Khan, Karim Janat and Gulbadin Naib to cap the hat-trick today. According to ESPNCricinfo , Cummins became the second player to take a hat-trick in consecutive international matches after Akram, who did it in consecutive Tests against Sri Lanka in March 1999. Cummins also became the fifth bowler to have two hat-tricks in men’s T20Is, and joined Lasith Malinga, Tim Southee, Serbia’s Mark Pavlovic and Malta’s Waseem Abbas on the list. The Australian was the first player to register a hat-trick in consecutive ICC Men’s T20 World Cup matches, it said. “It was just the eighth time that a bowler has
